The second largest CO2 maker is expected to be back online next week

A second major producer of carbon dioxide could be back online in a matter of days to ease the UK’s national shortage, a director said.

Ensus, based in Teesside, can supply around 40% of the UK’s CO2 demand, but the biofuel plant has been closed every year for routine maintenance.

The plant, at Wilton International, produces CO2 as a byproduct of turning wheat into bioethanol – which can be used as a fuel or as an additive to gasoline – and is expected to be operational again next week.

We are making around 40% of UK demand so we don’t solve the whole problem, but we are part of the solution

Ensus chief executive Grant Pearson said the shutdown was planned six months ago and the start-up next week is still on schedule.

He said: “We are producing around 40% of UK demand, so we don’t solve the whole problem – but we are part of the solution.”

Carbon dioxide is used in the food chain, to stun chickens and pigs before slaughter, in health services and in the nuclear industry.

CF Fertilisers, which has two factories in the UK, one of which is near Billingham, has been forced to shut down due to the high price of gas.

Carbon dioxide is a byproduct of fertilizer manufacturing and the US company supplies around 60% of the UK’s needs.

After government intervention with a loan, production on the CF site could be back online a few days after the shutdown.
