Kim Kardashian called the court system “unfair” in the case of a 26-year-old truck driver who was sentenced to 110 years in prison in the United States.
The reality TV star was commenting on the case of Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, who received a lengthy sentence for driving homicide, following a crash that killed four in Colorado in 2019.
The 41-year-old recently passed the baby bar on her fourth attempt as part of her legal apprenticeship.
“I know everyone posted on Rogel Aguilera-Mederos this week,” she wrote on her Instagram story.
“I dove deep into this document to understand what the situation is. “
She continued, “(A) the shocking and unfair part of this case is that the judge was unwilling to give him such a long term.
“However, because of the mandatory minimum sentences in Colorado, his hands were tied. Mandatory minimum sentences take away judicial discretion and must end.
“Colorado law really needs to be changed and it is so unfair.”
More than 4.5 million people had signed a Change.org petition urging Colorado Governor Jared Polis to grant clemency or commute Aguilera-Mederos’ sentence by Tuesday.
“(Governor Polis) is a very good person and I know he will do the right thing,” Kardashian said.
“I pray that Governor Polis, who has been a leader in supporting reforms that enhance human dignity in the legal system, commute his sentence. “
She added that the behavior of prosecutors, who reportedly shared insensitive messages following Aguilera-Mederos’ conviction, had made her “sick”.
Kardashian said, “Four people died in this tragic accident.
“Rogel is on a life sentence for the accident, which will not only destroy his life, but will also impact the lives of his wife and son.
“And yet, for some reason, the prosecutor thought it would be fun to post a photo of a brake shoe trophy that she received from a colleague with a plaque.
“It makes me so sick. “
